He explained that spirits sometimes appear in the form of white orbs and although he is sceptical about the existence of ghosts, he and many other photographers have taken photographs similar to this one at the orphanage over the years. Prior to the opening of the orphanage in 1992, Wat Opot had been used as an interrogation post by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970’s.
Adults and children, who died from AIDS related causes, were at first buried in the grounds of Wat Opot, but hey had to build a cremetorium as the death rate rocketed up until 2002, when ARV’s arrived in Cambodia. Deaths do still occur, but are now much less common.
